Hurricane Florence Noon Update - Wednesday, Sept. 12

Wednesday, Sept. 12
NOON UPDATE – Hurricane Florence

-With this post, The News-Journal begins its three-times-daily summaries. One in the morning around 8-9, another at noon, and another at 5 for the duration of the storm. We'll also be posting lots of info in between as necessary. While this will appear on our Facebook page, the chronology can get confusing on Facebook, so a better option is to view it on our special page set up for this. You can get to it from our website or from here: https://thenews-journal.blogspot.com

-Ana Estrada Adan will be following our posts with a Spanish translation. We'll update the posts as soon as we get them. (Thanks, Ana!)

-Hurricane Florence is now poised to graze the southern coast of N.C. and then buzz the upper coast of S.C. before meandering inland. The change south in forecast would nearly double the amount of rainfall predicted for Hoke County, roughly equivalent to Hurricane Matthew (though remember, we'd had 12 inches of rain the week before Matthew struck and that compounded the damage then). Winds are forecast around 45 mph in Hoke County around 9 p.m. Thursday, increasing to 60 mph on Friday, and tapering off Saturday. Of course, the track is subject to adjustments, so this is a current snapshot.

-Hoke County will be under a curfew tonight from 7 p.m.-7 a.m. that was issued by the Hoke County local government. Citizens should remain indoors during those hours. Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Peterkin says it is not a situation where people would be arrested for breaking curfew.

-Hoke County Emergency Management Director Bryan Marley reports that his department is in the final planning stages of preparing for the hurricane. The county moved its meeting to 9 a.m. this morning, and will have another, final preparation meeting at 2 p.m. this afternoon. We'll have more details on the preparation after the meeting.

-Hoke County will open a shelter at DON STEED ELEMENTARY SCHOOL located at 800 Philippi Church Road at 6 p.m. tonight (Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018). The shelter is pet friendly and will have cages, food and water – bring your own leash and any pet medications needed. For details on what other items to bring/not to bring, visit http://readyhoke.org/.

-Transportation to the shelter, particularly for the elderly or disabled, is available through Hoke Area Transportation (HATS), until/unless worsening weather conditions make it impossible to operate. Those with transportation needs should call (910) 848-4646 and ask for the Transportation Coordinator.

-The county's emergency operations center (EOC) is now activated. For help with storm related questions or other information, call the automated information line at (910) 848-4645 or to speak with a staff member, call (910) 848-4646.

-A reminder from county officials: people who rely on oxygen or other medical resources contingent on electricity should make arrangements preparing for the possibility of their power going out.

-Hoke County Schools and Hoke County government offices will be closed Thursday, September 13 and Friday, September 14.

-You can sign up for automated emergency telephone notifications from Hoke County by going here: https://member.everbridge.net/index/892807736721708#/login

-Again, the North Carolina Fall Festival has been rescheduled for November 1-3. The Turkey Bowl football game (and other school sporting events) have been moved to next week.
